MARCH '11 ARCHIVES 9:39 PM 3/13/2011
happy march! just for the record, i'd like to state that this is the first year in the entire history of my having to file tax returns where i have actually finished and e-filed more than two days before 4/15. it is such a freaking monumentous occasion that if i could high five myself, i would. anyways, i'm back in DC for now. pensacola (also known as the redneck riviera, according to my coworker) was, as predicted, glamorous and exciting. the food options were a bit limited, seeing as how the highlight of the trip was finding a waffle house on the way to our client meeting. the place was run down and trashy but damn, the waffles were good. best three dollar breakfast ever.
so i've been trying to keep up with the tragey in japan, but it's almost unbearable to read about or watch. there was one story of a guy who was swept out to sea on the roof of his house after seeing his wife pulled away by the tsunami. when the rescuers finally reached him a day later and gave him water to drink, he just burst into tears. i cannot even imagine what that feels like. what i find remarkable about the whole situation is how relatively well behaved the people are. no crazy lootings or shootings, just a bunch of exhausted, emotionally drained survivors waiting patiently in line for hours on end for their share of food or fuel. i think that's incredible. now, i'm not saying that we need to live in a highly repressed society like japan's, but i do think there's a lot that we could learn from them. maybe one day i'll write a book entitled "Hey, Listen Up Americans: Here's Why You Should Be More Asian!" i'd put hello kitty on the cover, too. one time me, lynn and tracy stood in line for the koji bbq truck with 5,000,000 other asians in the toyota parking lot just to get our hands on some insanely good korean bbq tacos. three hours later (literally), when we were about 5 minutes from the front of the line, the truck announced that it had run out of food. everybody around us just sighed with disappointment, got in their cars and drove off. i firmly believe that had it been any other mix of ethnicities, there would have been yelling, cussing and possibly kicking or overturning the truck. but not asians. for better or for worse, we are generally well behaved. and sometimes it sucks, because there are situations where you really shouldn't be the responsible and passive asian kid your parent raised you to be (for instance, at a firm like ernst & young, where you'd just get eaten alive). but other times, like when all hell breaks loose on you in the form of a devastating earthquake/tsunami, managing to maintain a certain level of decorum/decency while you pick up the remnants of your life in front of the entire world is an incredibly inspirational thing to witness. AND shameful at the same time, because it reminds us of how ridiculously barbaric some of us look in comparison. yes, Lakers rioters, i'm talking to you.
all right, enough serious talk for tonight. i went on a full-blown pants-buying rampage today. i also bought a pair of jimmy choo espadrilles that will either be super cute or make me look like jessica simpson (super NOT cute). it's a crap shoot. haha. i am so ready for spring to come - it's going to be amazing to see the cherry blossoms bloom. PINK EVERYWHERE, i can't wait! i'm sure it'll be especially beautiful yet sobering in light of the disaster in japan. i'll put up some pictures in a few weeks, once the festival starts. have a great week, kids. xoxo.
